Known issues affecting Snikket Server release 20240109

This is just an informational announcement about a few bugs that have been discovered since the release a few days ago. We are currently working on a patch release, but in the meantime we wanted to let you know about the issues you might encounter, and the workarounds:

Inability for some non-admin users to contact remote domains

Symptoms: After upgrading from an older release to the Jan 2024 release, non-admin accounts (i.e. those with the “Normal” role in the settings) may be unable to contact remote servers. Attempts to do so will receive errors like Communication with example.com is not available.

Who is affected: This does not affect new installations, and it doesn’t necessarily affect all users who upgrade (in other words, after an upgrade some user accounts on the server may be able to contact other servers, while other accounts may not).

Only “normal” accounts are affected - admin accounts are always able to contact remote servers, and limited accounts are never able to contact them.

Workaround: The workaround is simple. If you have any affected user accounts, perform the following steps:

  1. Log into the instance dashboard with your admin account
  2. Click ‘Admin panel’
  3. Click ‘Manage users’
  4. Next to the affected user, click the edit button (pencil icon)
  5. Ensure “Normal user” is selected (it should already be)
  6. Click the “Update user” button

Repeat steps 4-6 for any additional users that are affected.

We have already found and fixed the problem and are preparing a new release with the fix. Any accounts that are not manually fixed using the above steps will automatically be fixed after upgrading to the next release.

Circle group chats may not appear for new users

Symptoms: The circle chats feature which is new in the Jan 2024 release does not reliably add new users to the group chat when they are added to the circle.

Who is affected: Anyone who has created new “circle chats” using the web dashboard since upgrading to the new release. Circle creation (without chats) is not affected.

Workaround: There is currently no workaround for this, we suggest that if you are using the new feature, that you avoid adding new users to your circles (if they have circle chats) until the next release fixes the bug.

Channel binding compatibility

We have received reports that some third-party clients may not able to connect to the new release, even if they support channel binding. The only known affected client so far is poezio. We are still investigating this issue and do not have further advice at this time.

Admin dashboard errors

We have identified rare circumstances which may cause the admin dashboard to fail to load (showing an error screen) after the upgrade. We have identified and fixed the issue, so if you are affected then the dashboard will work again after the next release.

Further updates

We are working on a release with fixes for all known issues, and you will receive a notification when that is published.
