Snikket Hosting: End of beta

Our beta has ended, and we are finally asking our beta users to transition to paid plans

If you’re reading this, then you are probably among the first people we welcomed to the Snikket Hosting platform, back when it was in beta.

We hope you are still enjoying Snikket as much as when you joined us, and we thank you so much for all the support, feedback and encouragement we received from all our beta testers while we were building the service! ❤️

In case you missed it, Snikket Hosting launched to the public in March 2024 (announcement), and new users have been required to pay for their instances since then.

As we promised in the email we welcomed you with, we have granted all beta users several additional months to continue enjoying the service for free, as a gesture of thanks.

As an additional “thank you”, we’re happy to announce discount codes for everyone who participated in the beta and switches before the end of July:

  • Monthly plans: BETA6M50 will grant you 50% off for the first 6 months
  • Annual plans: BETA1Y30 will grant you 30% off your first annual payment

The annual plans already include a discount (2 months free), so both codes give you equivalent discounts when they are applied.

So, what do you need to do?

Note: If you have an active JMP subscription, JMP may cover the cost for you. See the next section for more information.

We are asking all beta users to choose a paid plan by the end of July 2024. To do this:

  1. Log into the dashboard at my.snikket.org
  2. On your instance, click ‘Settings’, and then ‘Change Plan’
  3. Select one of the available plans, and follow the checkout process

Don’t forget the discount! On the checkout page press ‘Add discount’ and enter the appropriate discount code above.

If you have multiple instances, you will need to repeat these steps for each one separately.

Information for JMP subscribers

JMP and Snikket have partnered to offer Snikket instances to JMP subscribers at no extra cost to you beyond your usual JMP subscription price.

If you choose to take advantage of this offer, note that:

  • Your instance will be moved under JMP’s management and billing - you will no longer have access to it via the my.snikket.org hosting dashboard. Nothing else will change, you can continue to use your instance as normal, including your instance web portal for user management.
  • If your JMP subscription expires (e.g. due to lack of payment), JMP may shut down your Snikket instance.
  • After the transition, you should contact JMP support regarding any problems with your instance.
  • We will no longer communicate with you via email about your instance - any communication will come via JMP’s support team.

For JMP subscribers who want to accept this offer, follow the same steps in the previous section, but instead of selecting a paid plan, choose “Use existing JMP.chat subscription”. We will coordinate with JMP to take care of the transition for you, and contact you if we need any additional information.

FAQs

Q: Why do I have to pay?
A: As we stated in our beta welcome email, and on our website during the beta period when you signed up, we have never planned to run a free-forever service. Paying for the service we are providing helps us to sustain the project in an honest and straightforward way. Snikket CIC is a not-for-profit organization, and we use the funds to help improve the software, the ecosystem we’re part of and to promote communication freedom to more people.
Q: Can’t you offer the service for free? Other messaging apps are free!
A: It is true that many online services are available which do not ask you to pay. But providing such services to you is not free, so they are either unsustainable or making income in other ways (e.g. advertising or data harvesting). We are against those practices. Instead, we seek to earn the income we need transparently, by simply providing paid services.
Q: What is the price?
A: The price will vary depending on the plan you choose, and the region you are located (due to currency and tax differences). Follow the steps above to view the choice of plans and the price for your region. The price for our standard instance is $6 USD/month or less.
Q: What payment methods are supported?
A: We support payment via card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. We do not accept cryptocurrency payments, and have no plans to do so.
Q: I only want to pay via cryptocurrency, what can I do?
A: If cryptocurrency is a strict requirement for you, you could create a JMP.chat subscription. JMP provides a number of additional payment options, and they will cover the cost of your Snikket instance as long as you maintain an active JMP subscription. And as a bonus, you get a phone number you can link with your Snikket account.
Q: Will there be any interruption to my service when I change plans?
A: No, unless you choose the new “Large” (30-user) plan. In this case your instance will briefly restart with increased capacity.
Q: What is the deadline for switching to a paid plan?
A: We request that you switch before 31st July 2024. If this is not possible for you, please let us know.
Q: What will happen if I miss the deadline?
A: The provided discount codes will no longer be valid after the deadline. If your instance is not on a paid plan by the deadline and we are unable to contact you, we will assume you no longer want the instance and we will eventually shut it down.
Q: Can I get an extended deadline, exemption or custom pricing?
A: One of our goals is to allow as many people to benefit from open communication technology as possible. If you think you have a special case, feel free to contact us so we can discuss it.
Q: Can I migrate to another provider?
A: Of course. We do not believe in locking you in to our service. Contact us and we can provide you with the data and instructions you need to set up elsewhere.
