Hello everyone! We have just published an update for the Snikket server software. It contains a few small improvements and an important bug fix for iOS users.

Note: A previous version of this release (stable.20240216) was temporarily available, but contained a bug that prevented Snikket from obtaining/updating certificates. This version fixes that.

What this is about

This agreement applies when you sign up for a hosted Snikket instance. It does not apply to anyone self-hosting their own instance of Snikket.

If you are a user of a hosted Snikket instance, you are not subject to this agreement, but you are subject to our User Acceptable Use Policy And Disclaimer.

In this agreement:

“We”, “us”, and “our” means Snikket Community Interest Company c/o Hand & Co. Manor House Offices, Malvern Rd, WR2 4BS England.
“You” and “your” means the person who has signed up to purchase (or who receives from one of our partners, such as JMP) a subscription to a hosted Snikket instance from us or, if you signed up on behalf of a company or other entity for which you are authorised to do so, that company or other entity.

This agreement applies to the exclusion of any terms you send to us. It supersedes all previous negotiations, understandings and representations. If you do not agree to this, you do not have authority to access the hosted Snikket instance.

1. The Snikket app

This agreement applies to your use of the Snikket app, if you downloaded it from Google Play or Apple’s App Store (the “Snikket app”). It does not apply if you obtained the software from elsewhere.
The Snikket app is Free/Open-Source software licensed under GNU GPL 3.0, and it is also available, in source forms, at https://github.com/snikket-im. Nothing in this agreement attempts to alter or restrict your rights under GNU GPL 3.0.
By using the Snikket app, you are entering into this agreement. This agreement applies to the exclusion of any terms you supply, provide, or otherwise attempt to incorporate, and it supersedes all previous negotiations, understandings and representations.
If you do not agree to this agreement, you are not permitted to download or use the Snikket app. If you have already downloaded the app and do not agree to this agreement, you must delete the Snikket app immediately.
In this agreement, “We”, “us”, and “our” means Snikket Community Interest Company c/o Hand & Co. Manor House Offices, Malvern Rd, WR2 4BS England.

2. It is free – use it at your own risk!

The Snikket app is available free of charge, and you can download and use it without payment.
There is no warranty for the Snikket app, to the extent permitted by applicable law. Except when otherwise stated in writing, we provide the program “as is” without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The entire risk as to the quality and performance of the program is with you. Should the Snikket app prove defective, you assume the cost of all necessary servicing, repair or correction.
In no event unless required by applicable law or agreed to in writing will we be liable to you for damages, including any general, special, incidental or consequential damages arising out of the use or inability to use the Snikket app (including but not limited to loss of data or data being rendered inaccurate or losses sustained by you or third parties or a failure of the Snikket app to operate with any other programs), even if such holder or other party has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
This clause survives cancellation or termination of this agreement.

3. This is an app, not a service

The Snikket app lets you communicate via the XMPP protocol.
You are responsible for how you use the Snikket app, what you communicate (i.e. your messages, pictures, files etc.), with whom you communicate using it, and how you do so. You must have any and all licences, rights, or other permissions that you require, for what you do with the Snikket app. This also means that you are solely responsible for backing up your own content.
We are not operating, or providing you with access to, a service under this agreement. We are not responsible for anything you send or receive, or otherwise see or access, via the Snikket app, and we have no control over, or visibility of, it.

4. Prohibited uses

You must not use the Snikket app to threaten, harass, stalk, abuse, disrupt, or otherwise violate or infringe the rights (including but not limited to copyright, rights of privacy and publicity) of others; or to do anything which is contrary to the law in the country in which you are using the Snikket app, or which could give rise to either or both civil or criminal liability for you or us (or both).

Known issues affecting Snikket Server release 20240109

This is just an informational announcement about a few bugs that have been discovered since the release a few days ago. We are currently working on a patch release, but in the meantime we wanted to let you know about the issues you might encounter, and the workarounds:

Inability for some non-admin users to contact remote domains

Symptoms: After upgrading from an older release to the Jan 2024 release, non-admin accounts (i.e. those with the “Normal” role in the settings) may be unable to contact remote servers. Attempts to do so will receive errors like Communication with example.com is not available.

F-Droid security update

Last week, Snikket Android users who installed the Snikket app via F-Droid started receiving a warning that it contained a security vulnerability. This wasn’t entirely accurate, as the problem wasn’t with the Snikket app itself but specifically F-Droid’s own build of the app that was using an outdated version of the WebRTC library.

As of today, F-Droid have published a new build (2.10.3) of the Snikket app that now uses an up-to-date version of the WebRTC component. The new WebRTC was built by us and published to Maven Central, one of the sources that F-Droid trusts for certain pre-built dependencies.

Like many communication apps, Snikket uses WebRTC for audio and video calls. We’ve been working on finding a way for F-Droid to build Snikket with a more up-to-date version of the WebRTC library that meets the constraints of their build processes and policies. We’re happy that this work has paid off!

Update 2022-12-11: A new update (2.10.3) is has been published, and the security warning should clear after installing this update.

Snikket Android users who installed the app via F-Droid may receive a warning from F-Droid telling them that the app has a vulnerability and that they “recommend uninstalling immediately”. First of all - don’t panic! This is a over-simplified generic warning that is scary, but the actual situation is not quite so scary and has an explanation. Here goes…

Snikket Server - 2022-01-13 security release

A security flaw has been found and fixed in a core component of the Snikket server software, Prosody. A fix has been released today, and it is recommended that everyone upgrades as soon as possible to receive the fix.

The flaw would allow an attacker to trigger the Snikket server to consume extreme amounts of resources (CPU and RAM), resulting in a denial of service.

What is Snikket?

Snikket is a messaging app with a focus on privacy and ease of use.

To support your privacy, Snikket is fundamentally different to other messaging apps that you may be familiar with.

Most popular messaging apps are developed by large businesses who provide the service for free in exchange for gathering data about you and showing you ads. In addition, all your messages travel through internet servers operated by them.

Deleting your Snikket account

Hey! We understand that for whatever reason, you may wish to delete a Snikket account. This page will help explain how to do that.

Using the Snikket Android app

Open the Snikket app
Tap the ‘⁝’ three dot menu in the top-right corner
Select ‘Manage accounts’
Long-press on the account you wish to delete
Select ‘Delete account’

Read and accept the prompts to confirm deletion of your account.

Using the Snikket iOS app

Open the Snikket app
Tap ‘Settings’
Tap on the account you wish to delete
At the bottom of the account settings page, tap ‘Delete account’

Read and accept the prompts to confirm deletion of your account.

Q: What on Earth is this Snikket thing?

A: Snikket is a chat service, designed to be as simple and user-friendly as possible, and to provide all the features people have come to expect from modern chat software. Snikket is decentralized, which means that it’s made up of a network of independent servers, not a cluster of “cloud” servers controlled exclusively by a single company, as in apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.

A messaging app where family comes first

Snikket is a family-friendly chat app, which supports one-to-one messaging, voice and video calls, group chats and many other features.

Snikket requires no phone number or SIM card. The Snikket apps work on any Android or iOS device with an internet connection. Repurpose that old tablet as a family communication device!

Snikket also allows you to restrict certain accounts (such as kids’ accounts) for safety, to ensure they can only communicate with the people you invite - no strangers or unexpected contacts. Just invite family and friends you trust to your family’s Snikket instance.

Snikket Hosting 2024 DNS update

We are asking folk with Snikket instances created during the beta linked to custom domains to update their DNS records with new IPs.

Newer instances have been using the new IP addresses for some time, but we are finally asking beta users to update so we can retire some of the older infrastructure.

FAQs

Q: What changes do I need to make?: A: You should have received a link from Snikket support which provides this information. The same link can be used to test your records are correct.
Q: Will there be any interruption to the service when I update my DNS?: A: No. If you use the correct values from the above link, there will be a seamless transition to the new IP addresses.
Q: How can I update my DNS records?: A: Most people are using a DNS provider, which may be your registrar where you purchased the domain, or it may be somewhere else. Most DNS providers provide a dashboard where you can edit your DNS records.
Q: What is the deadline for updating my DNS records?: A: We request that you update the DNS records before 27th May 2024.
Q: What will happen if I don’t update my DNS records in time?: A: You may experience some extended interruptions to your service in a few weeks when we are performing maintenance. Later in the year we plan to turn these IP addresses off completely.
Q: Why is this change necessary?: A: If you have received a request from us to update your DNS records, it means your domain was set up when Snikket’s hosting platform was still in beta. Since that time we have grown and improved our infrastructure. Your DNS currently points to the IP addresses of one of our oldest servers, and it needs a break :)
Q: Is this kind of thing going to happen often?: A: No, we don’t anticipate any necessary DNS changes again in the near future. The new IP addresses are expected to remain in service for years to come.
Q: I did not receive a request to update my DNS. Do I need to do anything?: A: If you use a custom domain (not ending with .snikket.chat) and your instance was created during the beta period, we will have contacted you (or JMP support may have contacted you, if you are a JMP customer). If you are unsure about the status of your instance, feel free to email us at hosting@snikket.org (don’t forget to mention your domain name so we can look it up).
