Introduction

This document, the “Policy,” outlines the Snikket project’s (the “Project”) policy for the use of our trademarks. While our software is available under a free and open source software license, the copyright license does not include an implied right or license to use our trademark.

The role of trademarks is to provide assurance about the quality of the products or services with which the trademark is associated. But because an open source license allows your unrestricted modification of the copyrighted software, we cannot be sure that your modifications to the software are ones that will not be misleading if distributed under the same name. Instead, this Policy describes the circumstances under which you may use our trademarks.

A Community Interest Company (CIC) of this kind has a community purpose at its heart. In our case that purpose is developing, supporting and promoting open-source communcation software that gives people full control over their communications and their private data.

Overview

Snikket is an ambitious project to build a new kind of XMPP-based messaging platform.

Until now, the XMPP ecosystem has been very fragmented - a collection of projects with a mixture of different designs, terminologies and quality. Diversity is excellent, and the foundation of any healthy ecosystem. But we also need to have some amount of consistency. Snikket aims to provide this consistency, and provide a friendly entrance to the world of XMPP.

Snikket is built on the principle of increasing privacy for everyone. We believe people own their personal data, and have a right to know how and when it is collected, processed and shared.

Unlike many technology companies today, Snikket Community Interest Company is not funded through advertising, or the collection, sharing, or aggregation of personal data. All our software is designed to not share any data with us except where necessary for specific reasons.
